Thomas Jerome Newton, an alien from a drought-stricken planet, arrives on Earth with the mission of finding a way to transport water back to his home. He uses his advanced technology to become wealthy and build a corporation, eventually seeking help from a scientist to build a spaceship to transport water to his home. However, his plan is complicated by human vices, corporate greed, and a new love interest, Mary-Lou (played by Candy Clark).
