Midnight Express: Billy Hayes, caught trying to smuggle drugs out of Turkey, is sentenced to a lengthy prison term. The film depicts the brutal reality of prison life, including physical and psychological abuse. Billy eventually decides to escape, risking his life to find freedom.

He works as a night-shift taxi driver to combat his insomnia, further immersing himself in the gritty reality of New York City. Travis's observations of the city's decay and crime fuel his growing disillusionment and desire to cleanse the city. He begins to fantasise about taking action against those he perceives as the "scum of the streets".
