The SS Poseidon, on its final voyage from New York to Athens, is struck by a massive 90-foot tidal wave on New Year's Eve, causing the ship to capsize and sending passengers and crew into a desperate struggle for survival. A small group of survivors, including a preacher, Reverend Frank Scott (played by Gene Hackman), band together in the ship's ballroom. Reverend Scott leads the survivors on a perilous journey through the flooded, upside-down ship, facing obstacles like fires, explosions, and structural instability, as they attempt to reach the bottom of the hull and their only chance of rescue.
