The film is set in the 1940s in the American West, where the family of rancher Jacob "J.W." Ewing has lived for generations, and his dream is to buy up all the land in the area to see the buffalo roam the area like they did when his grandfather was alive. Ella Connors (Jane Fonda), a determined single woman, struggles to maintain her ranch despite constant attempts by J.W. Ewing (Jason Robards) to coerce her into selling. Frank Athearn (James Caan), a war veteran, is a small player who has recently bought a small plot of land from Ella to be able to pay his bills. Ella and Frank fight back against stampedes, jealousy, betrayal, and sabotage as they try to keep their land and their relationship.
