The film follows George Tweed (played by Jeffrey Hunter) as he finds himself stranded on Guam when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbour and invade the island. Tweed, along with several other American servicemen, initially attempts to escape into the mountains, but they are hunted down by the Japanese. Tweed becomes the sole survivor, relying on the help of local Chamorro people to hide him and survive for almost three years while the island is under Japanese occupation.
