" I didn't have the courage to die. I knew what I had to do to stay alive."
An American Army scout, Sam Varner (Gregory Peck), is tasked with moving a group of Apaches to a reservation in Arizona. Among the Apaches, he finds a white woman, Sarah Carver (Eva Marie Saint), and her half-Indian son, who were taken captive by an Apache warrior named Salvaje (Nathaniel Narcisco) ten years earlier. Sarah begs Sam to escort her and her son to his ranch in New Mexico, rather than wait for a military escort, and he agrees. However, it soon becomes clear that Salvaje, the boy's father, is hot on their trail, determined to reclaim his son, leading to a tense and dangerous game of cat-and-mouse through the New Mexican landscape.
