Dortmunder (Robert Redford), fresh out of jail, is approached by his brother-in-law Kelp (George Segal), who has a job lined up: stealing a huge diamond from a museum. Dortmunder assembles a team of skilled, but somewhat eccentric, thieves: bomb maker Greenberg, driver Murch, and locksmith Kelp. They plan to steal the diamond, but the heist is complicated by multiple layers of security and unexpected twists and turns.
